IBS Supplements
Many people find that using IBS supplements have really helped to remove their pain and discomfort. I have certainly found that remedies aiding digestion do help and also those that have a relaxing effect on the digestive tract.
Common IBS Supplements
Digestive enzymes can be found in a variety of natural foods such as yoghurts and drinks. These enzymes break down the food and so help you digest it more easily. They are often referred to as probiotics. You may also have come across the term prebiotics. Prebiotics are defined as non-digestible food that help to stimulate activity and growth of good bacteria in the digestive system. This bacteria helps to aid digestion and keep things regular. Prebiotics are usually soluble fibre and so would themselves be easier to digest for IBS sufferers (see foods to avoid with IBS).
There is a whole range of different fibre supplements available depending on whether you suffer with constipation or diarrhea. I would recommend seeing your doctor before you start using these as you could end up making matters worse. Whatever fibre supplement you decide to take always drink plenty of water and check the other ingredients present. Some contain artificial sweeteners and these can aggrevate your symptoms. If you already suffer with gas then make sure the fiber is non fermenting.
Anti spasmodic supplements are good for relaxing the digestive tract and regulating your intestinal contractions. Peppermint is very good for this and just drinking peppermint tea for me is a help. You can also get peppermint oil capsules. Chamonille tea is also known to soothe the digestive tract.
If you are female and find that during your period IBS symptoms get worse (this is true for me) then studies have shown that Evening Primrose Oil helps improve things. I have not tried this because the capsules are huge and I struggle taking tablets! I am using relaxation methods during menstruation and have been pleased at the improvement.
There are also plenty of foods that have natural laxative or binding properties and I shall look at those later.
